6 Tips for Telecommuting with Kids While Quarantined

If you’re telecommuting with kids, this is for you! Below are some practical steps to balance work responsibilities along with parental duties during the COVID-19 outbreak. Remember, you aren’t alone.

  • Create a Schedule- Answer the obvious questions. What are your set “office” hours? When will you take calls? Lunch break? Answering these questions will help you work smarter and not harder. Plan for interruptions. Due to recent events, and quickly changing updates, your employer might be flexible around your in/out times.
  • Capitalize on nap time- If your little one doesn’t nap, it’s important to still give them quiet time so that you can also plan to work.
  • Set aside some cool/new toys- Introducing some “new” toys will keep the attention of your little one for a little longer. These “new” toys don’t need to straight from the store, but can be a toy that was put away or previously rotated out of the toy collection.
  • Special Movie Viewings- If you can, try and reserve movie viewings times this during Mommy work time. Be flexible and plan for interruptions if you need to meditate a situation during the movie.
  • Take Shifts with Your Spouse. While we are all quarantined, if your spouse is available to help, tap them for some support and work out a schedule where you exchange sitting services.
  • Seek Extra Help if Needed. Ask for family support or hire a babysitter. Hire someone to come and help for a few hours a day or for the day. This might need to be a last resort option to ensure social distancing and minimize the spread. Even if your family is healthy, there is a possibility that the disease can eventually spread to people unable to fight it.

Information is changing hourly so stay informed so you can make the best decisions for you and your family.
